FIREFIGHTERS

Sidorov Advanced Driver Training provides coaching for both Whistler and Pemberton Fire Rescue Services. We start by driving utility vehicles through a variety of dynamic exercises, to hone basic skills and understanding. We then work with loaded apparatus, and finish by conducting the driving portion of the NFPA 1002 exam.

From the Ontario Fire Service Messenger:
Some firefighters may use POVs when responding to alarms. Specific driver training is required as approximately 25% of all firefighter fatalities are attributed to motor vehicle collisions while responding. A quarter of these accidents involve firefighters in POVs.

Knowledge of legislation and insurance issues associated with response to emergencies in a POV is also necessary.

Having the ability to responsibly apply theoretical knowledge and practical skills associated with safe driving practices is an absolute must if firefighters desire to continue to be viewed as professionals.

The following is from the USFA:

Since 1984, motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) have accounted for between 20 and 25 percent of all firefighter fatalities, annually. One quarter of the firefighters who died in MVCs were killed in private/personally owned vehicles (POVs).

Following POVs, the apparatus most often involved in fatal collisions were water tankers, engines/pumpers, and airplanes. More firefighters are killed in tanker collisions than in engines and ladders combined.

About 27 percent of fatalities killed in MVCs were ejected from the vehicle at the time of the collision. Only 21 percent of firefighters were reportedly wearing their seatbelts prior to the collision.
